Rec Center Expansion

By Jeremy Diener

The ominous rain clouds overhead couldn’t dampen the festive atmosphere on March 18 as students and campus and community dignitaries gathered to formally break ground on the Brewer Fieldhouse Expansion and Renovation Project, which will spruce up and add 115,000 square feet of new space to the existing recreation complex.

Student fees, approved by the student body in a 2001 referendum, will cover the cost of the project that, when completed, will occupy enough space to place it among the ten largest higher education recreation facilities in the nation. This unique arrangement is an example of direct student involvement in improving campus facilities, said Cathy Scroggs, MU vice chancellor for student affairs.

“The students told us they were concerned about their recreation facilities,” said Scroggs. “They said they needed more fitness space. They said they needed more aquatic facilities. They told us these things, and then they did what it took to make it happen.”

Brett Ordnung, president of the Missouri Students Association, also acknowledged the student involvement in helping to get the project off the ground, noting that students have an ever-increasing voice in such undertakings.

“The pressure is on students to stay involved, stay engaged and help make sure we continue to play a role in the planning of facilities such as this,” said Ordnung.

Highlights of the project — slated to open in September 2004, with the aquatic complex following in early 2005 — include a 50-meter competitive pool with seating for 1,000, a club pool with custom features such as a grotto and waterfall, a high-tech fitness club, a heavy-lifting gym and a new climbing and bouldering wall.

The completion of the upgrades will mark the 100th anniversary of the oldest structure in the complex — Rothwell Gymnasium. Built in 1905, Rothwell Gymnasium experienced expansion in both 1939 and 1959. The adjacent Brewer Fieldhouse joined Rothwell in 1929. These two historic structures were the original homes for Tiger athletics. The present-day recreation center was added in 1989.
