Counseling Psychology Is No. 1

By Jeff Neu

A recent University of Notre Dame study examined the level of research productivity at 433 counseling psychology institutions in the country. The study found the University of Missouri-Columbia’s counseling psychology program ranked number one in the nation. Now the program is celebrating 50 years of American Psychological Association (APA) accreditation, one of only six counseling psychology programs in the nation to reach that milestone since APA began accrediting them in 1952.

MU faculty, staff, alumni and students from the Department of Educational, School and Counseling Psychology and its counseling and career center recently commemorated the anniversary with a conference that featured a broad array of workshops for researchers and practitioners.

“The program has an incredibly rich history and reflects the evolution of the broader profession of counseling psychology,” said Puncky Heppner, MU professor and chair of the Educational, School and Counseling Psychology department.

More than 700 doctoral students have passed through the program, which opened in 1946. More than 35 graduates have become directors of university counseling centers across the country and more than 100 have been faculty at other universities. Today with approximately 50 percent of the program’s doctoral students consisting of either racial or ethnic minorities, international students, or gay, lesbian, or bisexuals, the program was awarded the 2000 Suinn Minority Achievement Award.

The program has had such pioneer faculty as Paul Polmantier, Robert Callis and John McGowan. McGowan, with former graduate student Lyle Schmidt, wrote the book, “Counseling: Readings in Theory and Practice,” one of the first books to seriously examine counseling. Many of the current faculty have made major professional contributions, such as Norman Gysbers, whose comprehensive guidance and counseling program is used in more than 33 states. Recently, in concert with the counseling program, the School Psychology program has created the nation’s first Center for the Advancement of Mental Health Practices in School.
