In a veterinary medicine quiz bowl that tests knowledge in subjects ranging from anatomy to pathology, University of Missouri-Columbia veterinary medicine student Joanna Buckley proved that she knows animals inside and out when she took first place in the competition.
This past January, Buckley defeated 24 veterinary medicine students from schools and colleges across the United States and Canada in the 2005 Nestle Purina College Challenge, a part of the North American Veterinary Conference held in Orlando, Fla. The competitors answered five rounds of questions from 10 different categories including: critical care, anatomy, pathology, internal medicine, exotic animals, surgery, radiology, clinical pathology, nutrition and fun facts. Buckley received a $3,000 prize for the win.
Buckley said that preparation for the national board examination last December primed her for the challenge. She also attributes her success to her clinical experience at MU.
“I strongly feel that the two years of clinical experience that I gained at MU made me a better competitor,” Buckley said. “We get two years of clinical experience whereas other schools often only get one. Almost every question I got right was because I could relate it to a patient that I treated.”
In addition to Buckley's $3,000 prize, the MU Student Chapter of the American Veterinary Medical Association (SCAVMA) also received $3,000. SCAVMA funds student travel to conferences, sponsors seminars and organizes other programs to benefit students. The association paid for Buckley to represent MU at the conference.
Buckley will graduate this May and will be commissioned as a captain in the United States Army. She will serve a minimum of three years as an army veterinarian and will pursue a veterinary career in small animal surgery or internal medicine.
