Opens First Residence Halls in 40 Years

Respect, Responsibility, Discovery and Excellence
are not just the University of Missouri-Columbia’s institutional
values, they are the names of MU’s four new residence
halls that will house students this year for the first time.
The residence halls and Plaza 900 dining
facility, located on Virginia Avenue, will accommodate about 720
students in housing and 450 students in the new dining hall. The
four-story halls feature five different types of rooms: single
with bath, single semi-suite, double with bath, double semi-suite
and double suite. Most single rooms have been reserved for Residential
Life student staff members.
Each room contains impact-resistant dry walling,
a sprinkler system, student-adjustable heating or cooling, bunkable
beds, a three-drawer or six-drawer chest, a desk chair and a desk
with attached bookcase and task light. Computer access also is
available within student rooms. Social lounges and study rooms
are available on each floor, and a kitchen area can be found on
even numbered floors. Respect and Responsibility are equipped
with classrooms and hardwired computer labs. Discovery and Excellence
have laundry facilities located on the hall’s ground floors.
“We know that the residence halls
provide a wonderful opportunity for students to learn and establish
lifelong friendships,” said Frankie Minor, director of Residential
Life. “We’ve worked closely with students to design
facilities that meet their needs both educationally and interpersonally
for years to come.”

The new Plaza 900 dining facility includes
take-out, grilled dishes and all-you-care-to-eat options with
tables, booths, love seats and bar seating. On Stage, located
in the middle of the dining space, offers display cooking each
day.
“It's
called On Stage for a reason; it’s really the focal point,”
said Julaine Kiehn, director of Campus Dining Services. “The
food is cooked there right in front of you.”
Two clear-paneled bridges and a furnished
portal room adjoin the four residence halls, which provide residents
a view of the courtyard and other campus facilities. Construction
for the College Avenue Bridge, which serves as an extended pedestrian
walkway, is expected to be completed this month.
“The new campus living options
will be a terrific attraction for prospective students,”
said Ann Korshgen, vice provost for enrollment management. “Students
today have different expectations about campus living. Our master
plan addresses these needs and offers an excellent strategy
for helping us meet changing expectations.”
As part of the Residential Life Master Plan,
MU will spend 15 years and $300 million dollars upgrading or replacing
all 19 residence halls. Respect, Responsibility, Discovery and
Excellence are the first halls constructed since Gillett Hall
opened in 1965.
Because funding for the four halls will be
generated through student room fees rather than donations, no
namesake was given to the buildings. Residential Life officials
believe naming the halls after the University’s core values
will encourage residents to become immersed in the culture and
expectations of life at MU.
