An elevated walkway will offer members of the MU community safe passage across busy College Avenue. A Bridge to Safety

Hundreds of students each day dodge motorists as they scamper across College Avenue to their classes and then back across to their dormitories, Greek houses or apartments in the East Campus neighborhood. By the beginning of the fall 2004 semester, they’ll have a safer option for navigating the busy thoroughfare.

As part of Residential Life’s master plan, a pedestrian bridge across College Avenue that will be under construction shortly soon will offer them safer passage. The elevated walkway will connect Hatch and Shurz residence halls on the east and the new Virginia Avenue housing complex currently under construction on the west.

More than 1,000 students currently live in Hatch and Schurz halls on College Avenue. By 2006, more than 2,000 students will live in residence halls located on either side of College Avenue. A 2001 study found that more than 69 percent of pedestrians who cross College Avenue do not use the designated crosswalk.

The new pedestrian bridge and the Virginia Avenue complex are some of the first steps in a $300 million Residential Life master plan that will upgrade or replace every dorm on campus over the next 15 years.

When the 721-bed Virginia Avenue complex opens next fall, it will be the first new dormitory project built at Mizzou in nearly 40 years. The next step will be to demolish Smith, Donnelly and Blair halls at the intersection of Providence Road and Stadium Boulevard across from Memorial Stadium and replace them with a new 656-bed complex on that site. All of the funding for master plan projects will come from student fees.
