Flagship
Council Created to
Support Mizzou
The Mizzou Flagship Council is a new organization
created to support and advance the interests of the University
of Missouri-Columbia. Alumni and friends of MU established the
Council, which operates independently from the University. A companion
organization, the Mizzou Political Action Committee, also has
been established to support political interests and governmental
relations critical to the advancement of MU. Articles of incorporation
for both organizations were filed on Oct. 22.
The purpose of the Mizzou Flagship Council
is to generate support for MU's mission of teaching, research,
service and economic development and to preserve and strengthen
MU’s national competitive advantage and its role as a powerful
economic engine for the state.
The Flagship Council board of directors includes
four former members of the University of Missouri Board of Curators,
including two who were past presidents. The Board of Curators
governs the University of Missouri System.
The bi-partisan board of directors represents
a cross section of Missouri interests in business, banking, education,
journalism, agriculture and law, among others. The Council initially
will have standing committees for Governmental Affairs; Marketing,
Advertising and Education; Columbia Community Relations; and Legal
and Finance.
In addition to the founding directors, the
Mizzou Flagship Council and its standing committees will include
other Missourians committed to MU's advancement. A membership
drive to encourage interested alumni and supporters to join the
Council has begun.
Richard Mendenhall of Columbia is serving
as the acting chairman of the founding board of directors. Other
members of the board are: Cindy Brinkley and Charles Brown, both
of St. Louis; Gretchen Myers, Kirkwood; Ann King Dickinson and
James B. Nutter, both of Kansas City; John Lichtenegger, Jackson;
David Haffner, Carthage; David Shorr, Jefferson City; Ted Smith
and Sean McGinnis, both of Springfield; Edwin S. Turner, Chillicothe
and Norm Stewart, Charles Digges, Jr., Jeffrey MacLellan, Richard
Miller, Robert K. Pugh, James C. Sterling, Jerry Taylor and Craig
Van Matre, all of Columbia. Also serving as voting ex-officio
members are Jay Dade of Springfield (president of the MU Alumni
Association), Larry McMullen of Kansas City (co-chair of the Campaign
Steering Committee) and Barnes Whitlock of Springfield (chair
of the MU Alumni Association LINC steering committee).
