Golden
Girls Win National Championship
The University of Missouri's renowned Golden
Girls dance squad captured a national championship recently
at the United
Spirit Association (USA) Collegiate Nationals.
The competition was held Feb. 9-10 in Las
Vegas, Nev., with prelims held on Sunday, followed by finals on
Monday. The 16-member squad, coached by former Golden Girl Shannon
Fry, advanced to the finals and was voted national champion by
the judges after a flawless performance of a two-minute, 17-second
technical dance routine played out to a mix of jazz and hip-hop
music.
Mizzou beat out eight other schools in the
finals, performing better than 2nd-place UCLA, and 3rd-place Kentucky.
Rounding out the standings were USC, Cal-State Fullerton, Arizona,
Boise State, Cal-State Santa Barbara and San Diego.
The national title is the third such championship
for the Golden Girls, adding to previous titles won in 1991 and
1992. Fry was a junior and senior member of those teams, meaning
she has had a share in all three of Mizzou's national championships.

“We're unbelievably excited about this,”
said Fry. “I'm really pleased for the girls, because they
have put in so much hard work, and to have it pay off in this
way is really gratifying. They are a hardworking group that absolutely
deserves this,” she said.
The roster of those competing in the championships
for Mizzou included: Abbie Adkins (freshman, Columbia), Ashlee
Chapman (freshman, Columbia), Carissa Brammer (senior, Lee's Summit),
Cassie Brammer (freshman, Lee's Summit), Courtney Brown (junior,
Palmyra), Katie Desplinter (sophomore, St. Charles), Lindsay Grieshaber
(freshman, St. Louis), Liz Hager (junior, Liberty), Melissa Happe
(senior, St. Charles), Jocelyn Happel (junior, St. Louis), Jenn
Holderness (junior, St. Louis), Elizabeth Honerkamp (sophomore,
St. Charles), Vickie Shadduck (freshman, St. Louis), Kim Still
(junior, Highlands Ranch, Colo.), Katie Wear (freshman, St. Louis)
and Julie Yoakum (junior, Columbia).
