Meet New President
Higher education accessibility, accountability
and affordability were topics that new University of Missouri
System President Elson
Floyd recently discussed with Mizzou alumni and friends.
MU Chancellor Richard Wallace introduced Floyd,
who officially began his presidency in January, to members of
the MU Alumni Association’s Governing
Board at their February meeting. Floyd talked candidly about
his priorities for the University, asking MU alumni for their
support. Convincing legislators that “an investment in the
University of Missouri is an investment in the future of the state”
is a top priority, Floyd said.
Floyd also described the University as the
leader of higher education in Missouri, stressing that the institution
and its alumni must work with the state’s other colleges
and universities to accomplish what is best for the people of
Missouri.
Following the board meeting, Floyd met with
the MUAA Legislative
Information Network Committee (LINC) about his legislative
agenda. LINC is a coalition of alumni and friends who contact
government officials about issues and legislation related to Mizzou.
Floyd told the committee that as he meets
with Governor Holden and members of the General Assembly, he will
communicate to them that the University is a good steward of the
resources entrusted to it. He also plans to emphasize the University’s
important role in Missouri’s economic development.
Floyd wrapped up his morning meetings with MU alumni at a panel
discussion with members of the General Assembly, which included
Senate Majority Leader Mike Gibbons (R-Kirkwood), Senate Minority
Leader Ken Jacob (D-Columbia), and Representatives Chuck Graham
(D-Columbia), Jeff Harris (D-Columbia), Steve Hobbs (R-Mexico),
Therese Sander (R-Moberly), Wes Shoemyer (D-Clarence), and Vicky
Riback Wilson (D-Columbia). Topics of discussion ranged from budget
shortfalls and the Tobacco securitization plan to the future of
higher education in Missouri.
