Baseball Wraps Up
Solid Recruiting Class

The Missouri baseball team has signed 11 high school and junior college standouts to National Letters of Intent, as announced by Head Coach Tim Jamieson recently. The incoming class will join the Tigers in fall 2004.

Coby Arzola is an infielder and catcher from DeSmet High School in St. Louis. He hit .358 with one home run and 17 RBI last spring. Over the summer, Arzola hit .366 with four home runs and 30 RBI for the St. Louis Pro’s.

First baseman Derek Chambers will transfer to Mizzou from the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith. He had a .385 batting average with seven home runs and 56 RBI in the 2003 season for Fort Smith.

Bill Disselhoff is an infielder from Park Hill South High School in Kansas City, Mo. He was an All-Conference first team selection last spring after hitting .417 with seven home runs and 25 RBI. Last summer, Disselhoff played for the Triple Play All-Stars of Kansas City.

Scott Dunwoody of Rock Bridge High School in Columbia was an All-State catcher as a sophomore and junior. Last season he hit .518 and had 20 RBI for the Bruins and added five saves and a 1.00 ERA as the team's closer. Dunwoody played for Columbia Legion last summer.

Left-hander Scott Elbert had a 5-2 record and a 0.14 ERA last spring for Seneca (Mo.) High School with 118 strike outs and only 14 walks in 49.0 inning pitched. He is one of the top left-handers in the nation and was ranked the No. 4 prospect in the area code by Baseball America. Over the summer, Elbert played for the Midwest Nationals based out of Springfield, Mo.

Evan Frey was an all-metro selection in the St. Louis area after hitting .413 with 17 doubles, 39 RBI and scored 39 runs last spring for Edwardsville (Ill.) High School. He played for the Edwardsville Legion team last summer and was named the District 22 Player of the Year.

Pitcher Bret Harvel is a right-handed pitcher from Blue Springs (Mo.) South High School. He was 10-2 with two saves and a 3.02 ERA for the Kansas City Triple Play All-Stars last summer.

Andrew Johnston will transfer from Jefferson County Junior College to Missouri next fall. The right-handed pitcher had a 4.15 ERA with 24 strike outs in 34.0 innings pitched last spring at JCJC. He was drafted in the 23rd round by the Cleveland Indians and played for the Topeka Capitols of the Jayhawk League last summer.

Doug Mathis is another right-hander that will transfer to MU next year. Mathis pitched for Central Arizona Junior College where he was 6-5 with a 4.24 ERA and 57 strike outs in 51.0 inning pitched. He was drafted in the 34th round by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2002 and was again drafted in 2003 by the Seattle Mariners in the 31st round. Last summer, Mathis pitched for the Elkhart Dusters of the Jayhawk League.

Shortstop Greg O’Neill will transfer to Mizzou from Wharton Junior College in Texas. He hit .285 with seven home runs and 30 RBI in 2003. He played in the Texas/New Mexico JUCO All-Star game this fall.

Jacob Priday is an outfielder and catcher from Sikeston (Mo.) High School. He hit .519 with eight home runs and 31 RBI last spring earning All-State selection. Priday played for the Midwest Prospects based out of St. Louis last summer.

“We are excited about the players we have in this class and look forward to having them join us next fall,” Jamieson said. “We were able to address our needs for the 2004-05 season, and I think that this group will be a good fit with our program. We were able to get a good mix of players from the state of Missouri as well as from other areas around the country.”

The Tigers are less than 100 days from the start of the 2004 season as they open up play on Feb. 13 against Nevada in Phoenix, AZ.
