Join us for CELEBRATE
MIZZOU! at 3 p.m. Sept. 16 in Jesse Hall auditorium. The Mizzou
Family will gather at a fall convocation with Chancellor Brady
Deaton to recognize our new leadership, celebrate the achievements
of our flagship University and look to the future. A Tiger Stripe
ice cream social sponsored by the MU Alumni Association will follow

Fighting Malnutrition in Africa
School of Medicine researcher Bill Folk
is working to combat malnutrition in Africa by improving the nutritional
value of sorghum, a staple of African diets. Read

Know Your Nursing Home
Nursing researcher Marilyn Rantz
has developed an assessment tool to help people determine the
quality of care in nursing homes using observations that can be
made during a 30-minute visit to the facility. Read

Device Simplifies Engineered Tissue Tests
Biological engineering Professor Mark
Haidekker created a device to examine the quality of engineered
skin grafts, heart valves and blood vessels. The device cuts down
on the time and money now needed to examine these tissue-engineered
items for problems or defects. Read

Undergraduates Find Unlimited
Research Opportunities at MU
Undertaking research projects has typcially
been reserved for graduate students. However, MU is offering undergraduates
the same opportunities to help them make the most of their education,
and to help direct them toward future academic studies.

MU Students Cook Competition at Grill-Off
A group of MU students trounced teams
from colleges across the country at the George Foreman College
Grill-Off. The Food Network will first air the competition on
Aug. 28, but these grill masters are the latest in a string of
MU students and alumni to be featured on cable reality shows.
Mike Hall, BJ ’04, won ESPN’s Dream Job in
2004, and Kelly Diedring, BS ’01, won Animal Planet’s
King of the Jungle competition in 2003. Read

New York
A little bit of the Ozarks is about
to make a big splash in New York as MU playwright and doctoral
student David White’s play, Trash, makes its debut

Caring for Animals in Iraq
Maj. Scott Bormanis, DVM ’94,
recently was awarded the Bronze Star for his service in Iraq.
Bormanis commanded the 248th Veterinary Medical Detachment, which
cared for more than 230 military working dogs and orchestrated
reconstruction projects for the Baghdad Zoo and other animal-related
facilities in Iraq. Learn

12 Standings
Team standings from men’s and
women’s sports helped MU snag third place in the Big 12
Conference. Read

Cup
Tiger Athletics finished 41st in the
nation in the Director’s Cup, a program that honors success
in a variety of collegiate sports. A record seven sports turned
in top-25 finishes during the 2004-05 season, helping MU improve

One
of the most popular benefits of MU Alumni Association membership
is the annual MU campus calendar. The calendar features beautiful
full-color photos taken by association members. The 2006 calendar
is scheduled to be distributed in November. MUAA members are encouraged
to take campus photos throughout the year and enter them in the
annual member calendar photo contest. June 30, 2006, is the deadline
for the 2007 calendar.
