In response to the catastrophic tsunami that struck southeast Asia last month, Syed Arshad Husain and other members of the International Center for Psychosocial Trauma are stepping in to train local mental health professionals and teachers to help children cope with the lasting emotional effects of the disaster. The MU Fire and Rescue Training Institute trains emergency workers from nearly every state in the country and every county in Missouri. Students learn lifesaving techniques in scenarios from water rescues to airplane rescues. Read more

Marie Kerl, clinical assistant professor of small animals, is part of a North Carolina Veterinary Medical Association team that provides relief for pets, livestock and wildlife in areas ravaged by natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Read more

Assistant Professor Kim Leon says films like A Very Brady Sequel can positively or negatively affect how stepfamilies readjust to family life. She recommends that therapists use select movies during counseling sessions to change unhealthy stereotypes. Read more

Award-Winning Program Aids
MU Students With Writing

MU was one of only 11 colleges nationwide to receive a national writing program certificate of excellence. The Campus Writing Program combines a small classroom environment with one-on-one learning to help students tackle their writing-intensive requirements. Read more

A Lifetime of Giving
Ann Crowe Essig, BSN ’71, was a cancer survivor who accomplished a long list of goals to help those living with cancer and other diseases. She died tragically after being struck by a car. In his wifes honor, LeRoy Essig recently endowed an undergraduate research mentorship program at the MU School of Nursing. Read more

Alan Ace” Greenberg, BS BA 49, has more than earned his keep as one of Americas most respected businessmen. A long-time friendship with Donald Trump landed him a recent appearance on NBCs The Apprentice. Read more

MU, Fans Bring Joy to Father and Son
Readers responded to a Jan. 12 article in the The Kansas City Star written by Mike DeArmond that detailed an encounter between basketball junior Jimmy McKinney and a terminally ill father and his special needs son. The University and generous fans have offered the father and son tickets to as many games as they can attend. Read more

New Class to Be Inducted Into Hall of Fame
Six former standout student-athletes have been selected
for induction into the University of Missouri Intercollegiate Athletics Hall of Fame. They were honored at a Jan. 21 dinner. Read their bios.

Mens Basketball Sets Team GPA Record
As a team, the Tigers earned a 2.91 grade point average, a record for men’s basketball. The Tigers also led the Big 12 in the latest graduation report. Read more

Wrestler Follows Family Tradition
As a wrestler, freshman Marcus Hoehn wanted to follow in his father’s footsteps. In high school, he earned his stripes by going to the Missouri High School State Wrestling Championships all four years. At Mizzou, he has taken third place at both the Lindenwood and Oklahoma opens. Read more

Hunter, Vander Kooi Earn Volleyball Honors
Junior setter Lindsey Hunter was selected to the AVCA All-American Second Team. She led the Big 12 Conference and was fourth in the nation with an average of 14.43 assists per game. Jessica Vander Kooi received All-Region Honorable Mention. Read more
