Joining the Ivy League
Mizzou’s
Campus Dining Services recently received the Restaurants &
Institutions’ Ivy Award, one of the most prestigious
national honors for restaurants and food service operations. MU
was honored for its ability to keep meals fresh and new in dining
facilities across campus, such as Plaza 900 featured above. Past
Ivy winners include Tony’s Restaurant in St. Louis,
the Ritz-Carlton in Boston and the Rainbow Room in New York.


MU Mourns Death of Football Tiger
MU student and football Tiger Aaron O’Neal died on July 12
after participating in a voluntary summer conditioning workout at
Faurot Field. The University is grateful for the show of support
for Aaron’s family, Coach Gary Pinkel, Aaron’s teammates,
and the football staff from so many members of the Mizzou family
and Tiger fans everywhere. Send
memories and condolences to the O’Neal family.
Association Sets Record for Membership
Peak membership set a record this
year at 37,550 members in the MU Alumni Association. Mica
Ward, BJ ’91, of Longmount, Colo., was named the association’s
37,000th member. Read

New Provost Appointed
Brian Foster will begin his job as MU’s
chief academic officer in August. As provost, he will be responsible
for the oversight and planning of all academic programs. Read

Law School Receives Gift for Dispute Resolution
The School of Law received a $100,000
gift from Geoffrey Oelsner Jr. that will strengthen the international
reseach of its Center for the Study of Dispute Resolution. A large
portion of the gift will help support South African students and
faculty who wish to participate in the center. Read

National Study Sheds Light on Middle Schools
College of Education researcher Jerry
Valentine led a multi-year national study of leadership in middle
level schools, which typically educate children in grades six
through eight. Learn more

Improving Corn Crops
MU faculty, along with colleagues from
several other universities, recently identified many of the specific
genes that have contributed to the appearance, yield, grain quality
and other traits of modern-day corn. This breakthrough research
could lead to important improvements in crop quality and yield.

In Touch with Their Feelings?
Despite their macho image in Hollywood,
Italian men actually show fewer characteristics of masculinity
than American men, according to an MU study. Learn
how this research raises awareness of gender stereotypes.
Shaping the Brain
An autistic child, an alcoholic adult,
a woman with an eating disorder – all of these people share
a lack of self-awareness of their problems. MU faculty members
recently published a book that reveals links between brain disorders
and self-awareness in psychiatric patients. Read

Tigers Play Arkansas State in Football
Opener
The 2005 football season will kick off
on Sept. 3 at Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium against Arkansas
State. This will be the first time either team has played at the
venue. Get

New Football Uniforms Unveiled
The football Tigers will hit the field
this season with new Nike uniforms made of a revolutionary material
that removes water from the body and allows it to evaporate. Learn

Tiger Volleyball Serves Up a Successful
Season
The volleyball team, ranked in the top
25, ended its spring season 14-4 overall while going 6-2 against

Dollars for Scholars
This fall nearly 200 Mizzou students will carry the honor of being
named Alumni Scholars. The MU Alumni Association and its affiliated
organizations awarded $225,000 to incoming and current students
this year – an increase of more than $25,000 from the previous
year. Membership dues and alumni fund-raising events support student
scholarships. Applications, which are due
Feb. 1, are available each fall. Learn
