Autism Research Receives $8.5 Million Boost
Children with autism and their families, like those pictured above, will benefit from a major gift to MU from William and Nancy Thompson. With Kemper Fellowships
In an annual tradition, 10 MU professors were interrupted mid-class and awarded $10,000 Kemper Fellowships for their teaching excellence. Read more about this year’s honorees.

MU Breaks Ground on Swine Resource Center
MU officials broke ground May 4 on a facility that will serve as the world’s only clearinghouse for genetic material and swine that researchers across the globe will use to study a multitude of health issues. Read more

Business’ Vasey Academy Receives
Renewed Support from Namesakes

The Vasey Academy, a hands-on learning experience for minority business students, will continue to provide opportunities thanks to a $1 million gift from Roger and Sandy Vasey. Read more

Performing Arts Center Receives Lead Gift
MU Chancellor Brady Deaton announced that the proposed performing arts center on campus received a major boost with a $1 million gift from the estate of MU alumna and art lover Mary Nell Porter, BS BA ’69. Read more

Sting Pays Surprise Visit to Music Class
Most Sting fans had to shell out big bucks to see the star in concert last month at Mizzou Arena. But some students just had to show up for class to get a personal visit from the music legend. Read more

Researcher Provides Evidence
Against Common Household Plastics

Reseracher Fred vom Saal, who previously found that common plastics contained a dangerous chemical, has gained support from other scientists on the issue. Their research recently caught the attention of California lawmakers, who may ban the chemical in plastic products made for babies and toddlers. Read more

Developing Safe, Innovative Bridges
Deteriorating steel-reinforced concrete bridges could be replaced by innovative designs thanks to researchers who are developing a new reinforcement system to help cut down on maintenance and safety concerns. Read more

Scholarships Support Students
The association and its affiliated chapters and organizations will provide more than $200,000 in assistance to incoming MU students this fall. The J. Todd Coleman Scholarship is among the new scholarships that are being awarded this spring. Learn more

Journalism Graduate Lands Cover of Newsweek
Photojournalism alumnus Brian Smith, BJ ’81, may well be one of the most famous free-lance photographers in the nation, as his timeless photo of Pope John Paul II was published on the cover of Newsweek magazine’s April 11 issue to commemorate the pontiff. Read more and view Brian’s work.

Batting a Thousand
The MU womens softball team currently is ranked among the nations 25 best teams, with a remarkable record in Big 12 play. After a recent win over 4th-ranked Texas, the Tigers hope to continue their winning streak for the remainder of the season. Visit the teams Web site for up-to-date information.

Tiger Football Makes Mark
With a shining defense in the annual Black and Gold game and three players who were drafted into the National Football League, MU football is on the move. Follow along as the Tigers work toward a successful 2005 season.

Wrestling Team Honors Individuals
The Tiger wrestling team wrapped up the 2005 season with its annual awards banquet honoring several wrestlers who helped the team reach an 11th place finish in the NCAA Championships. Read more

Scherzer Accepts Invitation to
USA Baseball National Team Trials
Sophomore pitcher Max Scherzer was one of 36 players selected to try out for the USA Baseball team. The selected players will have an opportunity to represent the country in international play. Read more.
