O.N. Pruitt Provides Insight
Into Southern Culture and History
MU's
spring Illumination magazine features many of Pruitt's
portraits. Above is Sylvester Harris and his mule, Jesse, outside
Harris' farmhouse in 1934. Faced with losing his farm during the
Great Depression, Harris called the White House and politely, but
insistently, asked to speak with Franklin D. Roosevelt. The President
told Harris he would intercede on his behalf, and Harris and Jesse
became national celebrities. View
more of Pruitt's work and read Illumination stories.
