Deaton Appointed Chancellor

University of Missouri System President Elson Floyd appointed Brady J. Deaton, pictured above, as MU chancellor on Oct. 1. Deaton is the 21st chief executive officer for the University since its founding in 1839.

New Information Commons Is a Hit With Students
The new James B. Nutter Family Information Commons, which is the renovated reference section of Ellis Library, connects students with the most powerful print and online research sources available. The west entrance of the library also has been renovated and has been named after Chancellor Emeritus Richard Wallace. Read more

Private Donations Break Record
On the strength of the For All We Call Mizzou comprehensive campaign, private donations to MU surpassed $130 million last year, shattering the previous single-year record of $121 million. The University has raised $468 million toward the campaign’s $600 million goal. Read more

Scientists unveiled a clue that explains why the seemingly untouchable flying ace from World War I became an easy target for enemy fire. Read more

Alcohol Is Healthy for Hearts
Research shows that alcohol, in moderation, reduces the chances of cardiovascular disease and can prevent tissue damage following a heart attack. Read more

Bearing the MU Brand
Mizzou fans show serious pride by displaying the University trademark in unusual places. The logo can be found emblazoned on the deck of a bass boat, on the tail of a four-passenger airplane and even in a 12-acre corn maze. Read more

Scientists Increase the Health Value of Soy
Researchers took tofu to a whole new level by adding beneficial bacteria to unfermented soy products. This could lead to a slew of improved vegetarian-based products for consumers to enjoy. Read more

MU Seeks Input for Accreditation
In November, MU will undergo a comprehensive evaluation visit from one of its accrediting agencies. The public is invited to submit comments regarding the University. Read more

McCubbin Tapped to Lead Association
Vice Chancellor for Development and Alumni Relations David Housh appointed Todd McCubbin executive director of the MU Alumni Association and associate vice chancellor for alumni relations. McCubbin will direct the operational and financial activities of the association. Read more

Top Faculty and Alumni Honored

The MU Alumni Association honored 19 faculty and alumni for outstanding achievements on Oct. 1 at its 37th annual awards ceremony in their honor. Meet the winners.

Student Scholarships Announced
The MU Alumni Association and its affiliated organizations work annually to bring the best and brightest students to MU. This year, $200,000 in scholarships was awarded to new and returning students as part of the Alumni Scholars Program. Get 2005-06 scholarship information and applications.

Remember Rothwell Gym, the Shack and Gaebler’s?
MU and its alumni association invite all Gold Medal Society members and all undergraduates from the classes of 1955, 1960 and 1965 to return to campus May 1-3, 2005, and celebrate the anniversary of their graduations. Learn more.

Paige Sports Arena Opens in Grand Style
Members of the University and Columbia communities gathered to celebrate the grand opening of the Paige Sports Arena on the MU campus. The arena is the new home of Tiger men’s and women’s basketball. Read more

The Chronicle of Higher Education recently handpicked four of them as rising stars, including MU communication doctoral student Maria Dixon. This national recognition, a kind of Heisman Trophy for new faculty, is just the beginning for Dixon.
