Life Sciences Center Is Dedicated

Missouri Gov. Bob Holden, U.S. Sen. Christopher “Kit” Bond and NASA Administrator Sean O’Keefe were on campus Sept. 17 to help dedicate the new Life Sciences Center. The $60 million facility features top-of-the-line lab equipment and open spaces designed to unify students and faculty from multiple academic divisions. Officials hope this collaboration will bring forth unprecedented advances in research and science. Read more

Student Enrollment Reaches Record Levels
First-day enrollment figures broke records this year with freshman, undergraduate and total enrollment higher than any other time in MU history. Minority first-time college enrollment also increased. Read more

SBC Gives Engineering $1 Million
The donation will help fund the College of Engineering’s new Information Technology degree program, which focuses on digital media, networks, wireless technology and information systems. Read more

Intermittent Exercise Is More Effective
MU researchers studied the effect exercise has on fat levels in the bloodstream, finding that short spurts of exercise are more effective than continuous bouts. Read more

Researchers Fight Antibiotic Resistance
According to the Centers for Disease Control, antibiotic resistance, or the ability of bacteria to resist drugs, has been called one of the world’s most pressing health problems. MU researchers are studying ways to make curent antibiotics work better. Read more

Crisis Stems From Health Care Worker Shortage
Recent reports show shortages are occurring in more than 200 health care professions. MU is working with other universities on flexible programs that could attract more students, as well as backing U.S. legislation for scholarships and student loans. Read more

View Presidential Retrospective Exhibit
An exhibit that showcases presidential images from the archives of the School of Journalisms Pictures of the Year International competition, one of the world’s largest and highly respected photojournalism contests, will be featured at presidential debate sites. Get exhibit details.

New Online Journals Showcase Mizzou Experience
Four new student online journals (or blogs) will allow readers to catch a slice of everyday life from the perspective of two MU freshmen, a senior and a student studying in Germany. The award-winning program posts weekly entries and also includes a journal from a first-year graduate. Read journals.

Each fall the Tiger Pride Awards and the Mizzou G.O.L.D. award recognize three alumni volunteers for ongoing leadership and service through the MU Alumni Association. Meet the 2004 recipients.

Based on his belief that cubicles kill creativity, John Q. Harrington, BJ ’77, transformed a run-down candy factory into an architectural masterpiece to house his business, Blackbox Advertising in Kansas City. Read more

Alden Receives Athletic Director Award
The All-American Football Foundation recently recognized Mike Alden with the General Robert R. Neyland Outstanding Athletic Director Award. Read more

Wrestling Team Releases 2004-05 Schedule
This year, the Mizzou grapplers will challenge six or more of the country’s top-25 wrestling teams, including Nebraska and Oklahoma State. The Tigers, currently ranked ninth in preseason polls, will appease local fans by hosting six events at the Hearnes Center. Read more

Basketball Releases 2004-05 Schedules

Syed Hasan was honored with local, regional and national awards for his work at Eva J’s, a campus dining facility. The restaurant and hotel management major won $3,000 in scholarships and a trip to the National Association of College and University Food Services convention in Las Vegas. Read more
