Lewis and Clark in the Spotlight

On Jan. 17, a troupe of 60 students, faculty and alumni from Mizzou took the stage at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, home to activities celebrating the National Bicentennial marking Lewis and Clark’s exploration of America.

In honor of the national bicentennial, MU is producing Corps of Discovery: A Musical Journey, the nation’s first musical drama featuring the Lewis and Clark expedition. The Charlottesville performance was the first time the University presented highlights of all three acts from the drama. MU previously presented Act I at Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center.

Corps of Discovery is a collaboration of MU’s School of Music and Department of Theatre, with assistant professor of music Pamela Legendre conducting. The music of composer Michael Ching, artistic director of Opera Memphis, and story by librettist Hugh Moffatt, songwriter for numerous recording artists, bring to life the adventures of Lewis and Clark, Sacagawea, members of the Corps of Discovery and the Native Americans they encountered.

Corps of Discovery: A Musical Journey had its world premiere May 2, 3 and 4, 2003, in Columbia, Mo., at the historic Missouri Theatre, 203 S. Ninth St.

Other Scheduled Performances:

New York City: A staged reading at the York Theatre, 8 p.m., March 2, 2003, for the theatre’s Developmental Reading Series. The York Theatre nurtures original theatre productions as its mission.

St. Louis: For the national convention of Opera America and for the public. Performances at 8 p.m., June 13 and 2 p.m., June 15 at Missouri Baptist University’s performing arts center. Tickets: (800) 430-2966.

Located near the Lewis and Clark trail, MU is the first public land grant university in the former Louisiana Territory and serves as custodian of Thomas Jefferson’s original tombstone.
