Author William
Least Heat-Moon has added a fourth book to his list of
publications. The newly released Columbus in the Americas
is the story of Columbus’s encounters with the Indians.
Heat-Moon, also known as William Trogdon, AB '61, MA '62, PhD
'73 English, BJ '78, is the author of best-seller Blue Highways,
PrairyErth and River-Horse: Across America by Boat.
Trogdon lives near Columbia.
Research by Catherine
DeSoto, ‘99 MA psychology, ‘01 PhD psychology,
on borderline personality disorders in women appeared in the August
issue of the journal Science as a news item. She began the research
as her dissertation work with MU professor and co-author David
Geary. The research suggests that shifts in estrogen levels can
worsen symptoms and this could underline the gender difference
commonly found in the prevalence of the disorder. DeSoto, now
at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, is continuing
the research, which may have implications for women trying to
decide whether to take oral contraceptives or hormone replacement
therapy.
John Lawrence,
superintendent of the Lincoln County R-III School District in
Troy, Mo., and EdD '83, recently was named president of the American
Association of School Administrators.
Actor Chris
Cooper won a Golden Globe Award for his work in the
motion picture Adaptation.
