@MIZZOU ASKS YOU

Mizzou Pride

@Mizzou readers share how they display their Mizzou pride ...

My father, Robert L. Tipton, BS ’66, is a very proud Mizzou alumnus—to say the least. Last year he decided to show this support everywhere he goes in his Mizzou pickup truck. He bleeds black and gold!

— Mark Tipton, BSG ’98

I survived living in Cornhusker country for more than five years as a Tiger fan. After graduation, I left Columbia to work at a TV station in Lincoln, Neb. It was quite a culture shock to leave Tiger country for Cornhusker mania, and my job required me to do stories about Cornhusker fans, players, and the general hoopla that surrounds every football season across Nebraska. I even had to do a news story on the infamous 1997 football game—what Nebraskans call the “Miracle in Missouri!”

When I moved to Omaha to work at another TV station, I decided enough was enough. That’s when I helped start the Tigers of the Corn alumni chapter, and served as its first president. When we moved into our house, one of the first things I did was hang my Mizzou flag outside. I considered it a point of honor that several neighbors felt compelled to immediately go out and buy Husker flags to “counteract” the enemy flag!

As you can imagine, I really enjoyed the Tigers’ win against the Huskers last year. I had to e-mail my condolences to all of my Nebraska friends!

Brian Zimmerman has a paw painted on his crown. This must have been a difficult photo to take!

Years ago while living in Jackson, Miss., I was sitting in my dentist’s chair while Dr. Mark Blackburn was fitting me for a new crown. He asked if I would like him to paint something on the crown. I said, “Yeah, how about a Tiger paw?” He told me to bring in a picture, and I ended up bringing him the paw image, which Mizzou was using at the time as its logo. Dr. Blackburn took the picture and told me to come back in two weeks. When I came back, he had hand painted the paw on the crown. The only problem was that he had painted it upside down. But, what do you expect from an Ole Miss graduate? I’ve had lots of fun with the paw on my crown. I never fail to test alumni from other schools by asking them if they believe in their University enough to have a logo permanently affixed to their teeth.

— Brian “The Fly” Zimmerman, BS ’73

First, in the most honorable spot next to my desk at the newspaper where I work is my diploma noting my bachelor’s degree in journalism. Second, I have a Missouri Alumni sticker on the back window of my truck and a Mizzou Tigers sticker on the bumper. (Please don’t be ashamed. Although my truck in a grungy old ’84 Dodge Ram, I’m really proud of Mizzou. I’m not trying to shame the Tigers!) Third, I have a Tiger emblem on my front door window. Fourth, I tell anyone who wants to know how great MU is. I am proud to have a BJ from Missouri, where the best journalism school in the world resides!

— Mike Johansen, BJ ’71

I am director of the Business Foundations program at the University of Texas at Austin. The first thing students see when they enter my office is a large wall hanging with the “Tiger Fight Song.”

— William J. Carner, MBA ’72, PhD ’89

I normally don’t like personalized plates, but the one on my Nissan 350Z (because of its double meaning) was too good to pass up: MI ZEE.

— Joe Hensley, BA ’95, JD ’98

I have Mizzou alumni plates like a lot of people, but I was lucky enough a few years ago to apply for and receive “Mizzou” as my legal registration. I will most likely have these plates on my cars for the rest of my life.

— Scott Roller, BS BA ’97

Bill, BS ’73, and Shermaine Riggins of Marshall, Mo., recently bought a new Cessna four-passenger plane, but instead of ordering the standard burgundy and blue color, they are flying in black-and-gold style with a Mizzou tiger on their tail.

My husband and I are both Mizzou graduates. We live in Illinois just across the Mississippi River from Hannibal. Constantly in the minority among Illini fans, we have a lot fun with and are happy to sport, an Illinois license plate on our Yukon that reads, “MZZU RAH.”

— Gary, BS ’67, and Cathy, BS BA ’80, Fesler

Our oldest son Rob, BJ ’03, had the Wisconsin license plate, “2MIZZOU,” and our youngest son Bill, class of ’08, has the Wisconsin plate, “MIZZOU2.”

— Bob, M Ed ’70, MS ’85, and Marty, BS HE ’71, Coons

I work in Kansas City, so there are lots of MU folks and KU folks. Whenever we play KU, I go around to the desks of the Jayhawkers and change their computer screensavers to Tiger themes. Some of them still don’t know how to change them back, and they won’t get that information from me!

— Chris Best, BJ ’97
