Track Team Completes NCAA Championships

The Tigers recently wrapped up competition in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, which were held in Sacramento, Calif. In total, Missouri had top 20 finishes in 11 events. Two Tigers, Christian Cantwell and Timothy Dunne, earned All-America honors, making a total of seven after combining the five from the indoor championships.

Dunne earned his only All-American distinction after finishing tenth in the 800-meter run. Dunne, a native of Jerome, Idaho, completed his career as a Tiger, but qualified for the USATF Championships held in Palo Alto, Calif.

Fellow Tiger senior Christian Cantwell of Eldon, Mo., received his seventh All-American honor after finishing runner-up in the shot put. Cantwell’s final showing as a Tiger proved to be his best. He threw for a career-high and a new Missouri record of 70 feet, 9 inches and also has earned a spot in the USATF Championships.

Another senior, Fiona Asigbee of Walford, Iowa, came within three point of being an All-American in the heptathlon. Asigbee finished ninth overall, and freshman teammate Jessica Stockard of Godfrey, Ill., finished 20th. Stockard’s best event was the 200-meter dash where she finished fourth and earned 902 points.

Also, junior Jennifer Bennett of Ashland, Mo., placed 12th with a 13 foot, 1.5 inch attempt in the pole vault, sophomore Jenny Bybee of Springfield, Mo., finished 13th in the high jump with a 5 foot, 8.75 inch jump, and sophomore Jesse Sims of Paola, Kan., earned 14th place in the high jump with a 7 foot, 0.25 inch jump.

Cantwell and Dunne joined Bennett, Stockard and Janae Strickland of Houston, Texas, for the USATF Championships. Bennett qualified on a “B” standard in the pole vault. Stockard competed as a junior national in the heptathlon. And, Russ Bell of Jefferson City, Mo., joined Cantwell and Strickland in the shot put competition. Bell finished 14th in the shot put, 17th in the discus, and 25th in the hammer throw in the championships.
