A
Great Bargain
The University of Missouri-Columbia predicts
a record enrollment, despite a recent 19.8 percent increase
in tuition. MU officials base this prediction on the number
of deposits received. Deposits, which are up 3.3 percent compared
to this time last year, are the money students pay to reserve
a spot for themselves in the fall.
“Mizzou continues to be an excellent
value,” says Ann Korschgen, vice provost for enrollment
management. “Students gain a top-quality educational experience
at a national university for one-third to one-half the cost
of a private university. It’s hard to beat that.”
National ranking publications are most often
devoted to promoting a select 10 percent of the more than 3,000
U.S. colleges and universities. Routinely included in these
publications, MU is highly ranked in quality and value by The
Insider’s Guide to Colleges, U.S. News &
World Report, The Fiske Guide to Colleges, Peterson’s
Competitive Colleges, Barron’s Best Buys in College
Education, The College Finder and Money
magazine.
Better recruitment and retention
strategies and an increase in high school graduates in Missouri
also have contributed to an increase in students at MU.
A major factor contributing to MU’s increase in tuition
is the fact that state support continues to decrease. Missouri
state appropriations per student in the University of Missouri
System for FY 2002 fell from $11,058 to $9,535, while actual
educational expenses per student rose from $25,780 to $26,365.
Although Missouri’s public higher education institutions
have received annual increases in funding in most years, the
system’s share of total state general revenue and lottery
proceeds has declined significantly since the 1980s. This decline
has occurred as the cost to provide state-of-the-art technology
and instructional support has increased.
The percentage of Missouri state revenue that goes to higher
education has declined from 17 percent in 1989 to below 12 percent
today.
Mizzou is one of only 34 public universities, and the only public
institution in Missouri, to be selected for membership in the
Association of American Universities (AAU). Membership is limited
to the most prestigious public and private research institutions
in the United States and Canada. State support for public universities
has been falling nationwide. See how MU ranks among its peers
in the chart below.
