MU Defeats Kansas in Inaugural Border War Series

Tigers Dominate Series by a 32.0 to 8.5 Final Margin

The University of Missouri has won the initial Midwest Ford Dealers MU-KU Border War Series trophy going away, with the final tally 32.0 to 8.5 in Mizzou’s favor.

This was the first year for the series, which awarded points throughout the 2002-03 season to each school for winning head-to-head matchups in the sports of baseball, basketball, football, soccer, softball, women’s swimming, women’s tennis and volleyball. Points were awarded in the sports of cross country, golf, and track for the team that finished higher at Big 12 championship events. Bonus points were awarded for matchups that took place in post-season competition (Big 12 or NCAA tournaments).

There were 27 events in which the Tigers and Jayhawks competed against each other this season, and MU came out on top in 21 of those instances. In sports where there were head-to-head matchups, Mizzou dominated by winning 15-of-17 contests, while the Tigers won 6-of-10 other matchups by finishing higher in team competition. The Missouri women’s teams were instrumental in securing the cup this season, as the Tiger women outscored Kansas women’s teams by a combined 23.0 to 1.0 margin.
The traveling Border War trophy was officially awarded to Mizzou Athletics at the annual Kansas City Sports Commission Banquet held in June 12th. Here is a brief recap of the results from the series this year:
