Education Dean Appointed
By Jeff Neu
University of Missouri-Columbia Interim Provost
Lori Franz recently announced the appointment of Carolyn Herrington
as dean of the College
of Education. Herrington replaces Richard Andrews, who is
retiring this month after leading the College since 1993.
“Dean Herrington is a scholar and innovative administrator who will provide exemplary leadership for the College of Education,” Franz said. “She has a tremendous understanding of and commitment to academic excellence and innovative collaboration and will greatly contribute to both at MU.”
Herrington currently is associate dean of academic affairs for the College of Education at Florida State University, as well as professor and chair of the College's Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies. At MU, she will hold the title of Joanne H. Hook Dean's Chair in Education Renewal.
“MU has a long-standing tradition of educational excellence that is well-known throughout the country,” Herrington said. “I hear about the excellent instructional programs and research opportunities occurring at MU on a regular basis. I want to continue to build on the strengths of the College, focusing on its solid graduate and undergraduate teaching and research programs, as well its path-breaking applications of information technologies. I also am interested in expanding its emphasis on international education and bringing a strong policy focus to all of its programs. It is an honor to join the MU family.”
Herrington received her bachelor's degree in English, master's degree in French and doctorate in languages and literature, all from the University of Florida. As a vice-president at the American Educational Research Association, she directs the policy and politics division.
“Dean Herrington understands the research mission of MU and the role the College of Education plays in it,” said Puncky Heppner, search committee chair and MU professor of educational, school and counseling psychology. “She has tremendous scholarly knowledge of teacher education, possesses excellent leadership skills, and will help guide the College's collaborative efforts both within and across the MU campus.”
The College of Education enrolls about 2,600 students and is organized into five units. The college has 91 tenured and tenure-track faculty with an annual budget of about $31 million.
