Leaving Her Mark
By Blaire Leible
Many students strive to leave their mark on Mizzou, but few get the chance to contribute to its sense of style. For senior textile and apparel management major Lauren Drufke-Mahe, a love of fashion and an eye for design helped her create the official MU Tiger Tartan.
Tartans are plaid designs historically worn
by Scottish clans as a way to develop a sense of collective identity
and unity. More than 6,000 people voted online, and the majority
chose Drufke-Mahe’s tartan design to represent Mizzou.
“I incorporated many elements that represent Mizzou,” Drufke-Mahe said. “The colors and historic landmarks were all important in creating my design. I wanted to make sure that for years to come, an individual will be able to look at the tartan and really know what it means and what it represents. I am proud to present a tartan that encompasses such strength and history inspired by our own Mizzou.”
Drufke-Mahe learned the skills needed to design
a tartan from her textile and apparel management classes. She
chose her major because fashion is something she truly enjoys
because it is an outlet for her creative talent.
“My emphasis is on product development as opposed to marketing and merchandising, so I have more of a hands-on interaction with the fabrics, patterns and computer design,” Drufke-Mahe said. “The textile and apparel management program is excellent, and I greatly respect and admire everyone in the department. I have had a great one-on-one interaction with all of my professors, and they are always willing to help and support each and every student in this program.”

Products featuring Mizzou’s
new officially licensed tartan plaid will be unveiled during
MU’s 2006 Homecoming celebration.

After graduation, Drufke-Mahe will intern at Soft Surroundings in St. Louis. She will shadow the technical designer in the areas of product development and fitting.
“My experiences at MU have really prepared me for this internship,” Drufke-Mahe said. “I feel more confident, self-assured and knowledgeable than before I entered this campus four years ago.”
Drufke-Mahe’s winning tartan design will appear on products in the fall and debut at MU’s 2006 Homecoming.
“I feel honored that I can give something to Mizzou after I have received such a great education here,” Drufke-Mahe said. “I have had a great college experience, and I am sad to see it end. However, I feel I will always be a part of this University because of my contribution.”
