Formula for success brings in crowds
and bucks
What makes an alumni fundraising event successful
— great attendance, a clear purpose, lots of fun or big
bucks raised? It’s that and more, which is why the annual
Black and Gold Tiger Ball is growing in popularity and success
in Kansas City.
Co-sponsored by the Kansas
City chapter of the MU Alumni Association (MUAA-KC), and
the Tiger Club of
Kansas City, the black tie ball has raised more than $75,000
for student academic and athletic scholarship programs in its
first three years. This year’s event is scheduled April
25 at the Westin Crown Center Hotel, Kansas City, with John
and Dolly Kadlec and Larry and Marilyn McMullen serving as the
honorary co-chairs. John received a bachelor’s degree
in education from MU in 1951 and a master’s degree in
education in 1952. Larry graduated from the MU School of Law
in 1959, and Marilyn earned a bachelor’s degree in education
in 1954.
Melissa Heapes, a freshman pre-journalism
major at Mizzou, is one of many students who have benefited
from the scholarship programs. “It was really nice to
get the scholarship, because I live on the Kansas side, so it’s
helping cover the cost of my out-of-state tuition. It’s
also been great meeting alumni from the Kansas City area,”
Heapes says.
More than 400 guests are expected to attend
the black and gold extravaganza, which combines a pre-dinner
patron’s party, dancing and auctions with such activities
as the annual raffle for a golden sapphire ring, blackjack tables
and a golf putting contest. Major sponsors include Coca-Cola,
First National Bank of Missouri, Acuff and Rhodes, Eskew’s
Fine Jewelers, and Ingram’s magazine.
Approximately 20 volunteers work year-round
on eight committees to plan the ball. “The commitment
and hard work from the planning committee and many other volunteers
make this event so successful,” says 2003 Co-Chair Tracey
Mershon, BJ ’85.
Although the Tiger Ball is only three years
old, MUAA-KC’s scholarship program has been in existence
for more than 20 years and has awarded approximately $250,000
in scholarships during that time.
“The Tiger Ball has proved to be a
wonderful compliment to our chapter’s other major fundraising
event, the fall picnic and auction,” says Stuart Woody,
MUAA-KC president. “In addition, our partnership with
the Tiger Club of Kansas City gives us a broader audience appeal
and financial support.”
