State Farm Gift Enhances Finance, Economics Programs

By Jeremy Diener

The University of Missouri-Columbia will offer enhanced training for tomorrow's financial planners and economic educators thanks to a $90,000 gift from State Farm Insurance.

A large portion of the gift will enhance the Office of Financial Success in the Department of Personal Financial Planning in MU's College of Human Environmental Sciences. The College will use $45,000 to renovate the State Farm Financial Counseling Room and to purchase video equipment, furniture and computers for the room. Another $30,000 will establish an endowment to support the program.

“Having the opportunity to partner with State Farm Insurance is a tremendous boost to this vital program,” said Stephen Jorgensen, dean of the College of Human Environmental Sciences. “The Office of Financial Success will provide innovative educational opportunities for our students and members of our community, such as personal financial counseling and planning, campus and community seminars, peer education and counseling, Volunteer Income Tax Assistance programs, and support for community outreach efforts. This gift recognizes State Farm's commitment to the quality of family life and the financial well-being of citizens everywhere.”

Additionally, the College of Arts and Science will use $15,000 to establish State Farm Personal Finance Workshops. The workshops, held four times each year, will target elementary and secondary educators. Participants will learn methods for teaching financial education so their students will learn to understand the impact of their financial decisions better.

“Economics addresses an exceptionally broad and important range of issues that affect our lives,” said Richard Schwartz, dean of the College of Arts and Science. “Unfortunately, most are not formally introduced to it until they enter college. This program provides Missouri elementary and secondary school students a very special opportunity, and we are most grateful to State Farm for supporting us in this unique and important effort.”

Curt Dreier, State Farm vice president of agency for the Missouri Market, said the parallels between the company and the University make the gift appropriate.

“State Farm and MU have something in common,” Dreier said. “We're both top quality organizations focused on creating a better future for Missourians. Mizzou does that by offering a world class education for our young people and providing ongoing research opportunities. State Farm does so by helping its customers recover from losses and plan for their financial future. On behalf of our State Farm agents and the State Farm Companies Foundation, we're proud to say that 'We Live Where You Live.'”
