STUDENT CLOSE-UP

Left to right: Libby Hall, Holli Coleman, Liz Underwood and Melissa Hillebrenner have started their advertising careers early thanks to Nokia and the Missouri School of Journalism.

Ad Whiz Kids

The work of Holli Coleman, Libby Hall, Liz Underwood, and Melissa Hillebrenner was recently shown in households across the nation — something the advertising students expected to happen soon in their careers, but not before graduating from college. Through a unique program by Nokia, the students wrote, directed and produced 30-second television spots that are airing on Fox and cable networks such as MTV and Cartoon Network.

The opportunity for the project came in a broadcast advertising class taught by adjunct professor Jack Smith, AB ’62, who once served as group president and deputy chief creative officer for Leo Burnett, Inc., a renowned ad agency based in Chicago. Students paired up to create a commercial for the new Nokia 3650 camera phone in a Nokia-developed advertising program, The New U.

The four students, who worked in pairs, won the class competition, and were shocked to learn that their commercials would be produced and used on-air. The group was flown to Dallas to serve as art directors for the shoot, which took place during the last week of March.

“The entire project with Nokia has been absolutely amazing,” Coleman said. “Working with a globally recognized client and developing concepts for a national ad campaign, all as a college student, is a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Hall and Coleman’s advertisement centers around a young man too embarrassed to tell his girlfriend he loves her in front of his friends, so he writes “I love you,” in ketchup on a fast-food wrapper and takes a picture of it.

Hillebrenner and Underwood’s advertisement features a young woman studying in the library who asks her friend to watch her boyfriend while he’s out a bar. He meets a new girl and the friend sends a picture to the girlfriend on her camera phone.

“This was completely unexpected but amazing,” Underwood said. “Nokia has given Mizzou journalism students the chance of a lifetime and the opportunity to experience unparalleled real-life experience.”
