The University of Missouri-Columbia and the
MU Alumni Association
awarded the 2004 Geyer Public Service Awards to Dudley McCarter
and Missouri State Senator John Russell for their efforts on behalf
of higher education and the University.
The Alumni Association’s Legislative
Information Network Committee (LINC) annually presents the
awards to one state-elected official and one citizen who exemplify
the dedication and spirit of Henry Geyer. A former state representative,
Geyer believed education was the key to progress and prosperity
in Missouri and introduced a bill to establish the University
of Missouri in 1839.
“The Geyer Award is our way of
thanking these individuals for their service to MU and Missouri
higher education,” said Debbie Snellen, president of the
MU Alumni Association. “Both Russell and McCarter are dedicated
to the cause of higher education. We want them to know that now,
more than ever, their support is critical and we appreciate all
they’ve done.”
After graduating from Drury College, Russell served in the United
States Air Force during the Korean War. He was elected to the
Missouri House of Representatives in 1962 and served as the minority
floor leader from 1971 to 1972. He was elected to the Missouri
Senate in 1976 and is currently in his seventh term.
Russell has continued to support higher education
despite budget cuts. Over the past two years, he took the lead
in protecting the University Hospitals and the Ellis
Fischel Cancer Center from losing funding. In addition, Russell
supported the bonds for life sciences projects across the UM System.
McCarter graduated from the MU School
of Law in 1975 and was admitted to the Missouri
Bar Association and served as the organization’s president
in 1993-1994.
McCarter has spent countless hours supporting higher education
throughout the state. In 2003, he was appointed to the Governor’s
Commission on the Future of Higher Education. He also has organized
several major fundraising events as the president of the MU Law
School Alumni Association.
