Tiger Spirit

By Justin Roberts

The spirit of Mizzou is personified through its mascot, “Truman the Tiger.” To meet the man behind the mascot, you would also find the spirit of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources personified.

Ben Marshall, a sophomore agricultural education major from Jamestown, Mo., is well known in the college not only through his role as one of the five Truman the Tiger student mascots, but also because of his enthusiastic attitude and commitment to excellence.

As a student mascot, Ben makes between three and four appearances a week to bring Truman the Tiger to MU athletic events, hospitals, civic functions, schools and businesses. While his work as a mascot is unpaid, Ben said that his recent trip to the NCAA Tournament made it well worth it.

Ben’s involvement doesn’t stop with Truman. He currently serves as recreational sports coordinator for the Agricultural Living and Learning Community, contest co-chair for the Ag Week Steering Committee and is a member of Alpha Tau Alpha and the Collegiate Farm Bureau. Ben is a former Missouri State FFA officer and the reigning Ag Week King.

Ben was recently rewarded for his efforts in the college with the 2003 MUAA Ag Alumni Association Scholarship. As a recipient of the scholarship, he is invited to attend all alumni events including the Tiger Ag Classic Golf Tournament and Steak Fry, the Ag Day Barbecue and the Ag Unlimited Dinner and Auction.

“I really appreciate receiving the scholarship and all the donors who give to the college,” Ben said. “For most students, it is a necessity to have scholarships in order to free up time to get involved and enjoy all the aspects of the University.”

The tradition of attending MU runs as long as his family’s roots in agriculture, beginning with his grandfather, a 1950 graduate of the College of Agriculture. “Attending MU was an easy choice,” Ben said. “In fact, it was the only school I applied to.”

Ben plans to continue his role as Truman the Tiger for as long as he’s eligible. He also plans to work on his goal of serving on the MU Homecoming Steering Committee. Ultimately, he hopes to return to Jamestown, Mo., and begin a career as an agricultural education instructor.
