Autumn Memories

@Mizzou readers share memories of fall at Mizzou ...

Ahhhh, I love the fall at Mizzou!

My first memories of Mizzou were when my oldest brother, Joe Bestgen, BS BA ’89, was in the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and my sister Jan Bestgen was in Alpha Chi Omega sorority. I would drive with my parents from Kansas City to see house decorations on Homecoming weekend. Back then, house decs were quite the production. I even had the chance to ride inside the Sig Ep’s float. It was a 1960s-era car with the float built on top; it reminded me of the movie Animal House.

I later attended Mizzou from 1995-2001. Fall was my favorite time. I remember the trees changing color on campus; sleeping with the dorm window open in McDavid and Donnelly halls; Forest Village Apartments; and the needing-to-be-condemned house I lived in on the corner of College and Bass avenues. Other memories are of tailgating at Mizzou football games; watching the Tigers win at Faurot Field; sitting on the patios of Johnny's Beanery, Shiloh, Willie’s, Harpo's, TP's and Tropical Liqueurs; going to class in shorts and t-shirts and coming home to freezing rain and cold; and especially Hotel and Restaurant Management Class 235. We really had some great parties after those dinners!

Post graduation, I always enjoyed making it back to Mizzou from St. Louis for a fall football game. It’s been five years since my last visit. I dearly miss Mizzou!

Almost every time I go to the games I sit there and think about how beautiful the fall was when we looked at the valley below the football field. This was back in 1951-54 before the bleachers were added to the south end of the field.

I remember sun-splashed, Indian summer Saturday afternoons while we enjoyed the football Tigers at Stadium Rd. and Providence Blvd.
