MIZZOU NEWS

Beetle Bailey stands on construction vehicle.
More than simply the "living room" of campus, the new student center will provide opportunities that integrate out-of-classroom learning, leadership development and community involvement. The center also will house Mort’s Place, which will serve grilled sandwiches and appetizers during and after late-night events offered in the Shack, a programming area surrounded by Shack memorabilia.

New Student Center Construction Begins

By Michelle Froese and Patricia Bloom

You may have noticed Beetle Bailey loafing around campus. That's because construction for the much anticipated student center has begun. Thank goodness, Beetle won't be responsible for any of the construction — it's too much work for him. However, Mizzou family and friends will definitely notice a change in scenery as the new student center begins to take shape.

The new student center is being built in two phases to ensure that students have the resources and services they need throughout the entire process. Project one, which has just begun, involves new construction to the east of the current Brady Commons. Walk by the job site and you'll see the creation of a framework and the beginning of walls and mechanical equipment. After project one is completed in late Fall 2008, essential student resources and services will move into the finished area to allow for renovation of the existing Brady Commons, which encompasses project two.

Upon completion of the entire building in spring 2011, the new limestone center will be roughly twice the size of the current Brady Commons. Mizzou's new student center will remedy the many challenges related to lack of space in the existing facility. The new student center will offer students more space to:

  • study, socialize and interact with faculty and peers
  • get involved in student programs and activities
  • gain hands-on experience with student media, including the Maneater, KCOU and MUTV
  • develop leadership skills through Greek Life involvement
  • enjoy improved and diverse dining options
  • celebrate the history and traditions that define the Mizzou experience

More than simply the “living room” of campus, the new student center will provide opportunities that integrate out-of-classroom learning, leadership development and community.

As with all construction projects, parking can sometimes be a challenge. However, once the new student center is complete, some parking will return to the former Hitt St. Visitor's lot. Although the construction may be a disruption to our campus now, upon completion the new student center will unite past and present students in a new building that celebrates Mizzou tradition and spirit. Beetle Bailey never had it so good.
