Engineering
Receives
$7.5 Million for Facilities
By Kathryn Jones
The Engineering Building East will get a new name thanks to a
$7.5 million gift from Tom and Nell Lafferre, it was announced
in December. The donation will be used for planning and construction
of engineering facilities, said Jim Thompson, dean of the College
of Engineering.
“The
College of Engineering is excited and grateful for the generosity
of the Lafferres,” Thompson
said. “Their support will
help us to remain competitive by offering the very best facilities
that give our students the necessary tools to succeed in their
engineering careers when they leave the University.”
As a result of this donation, Engineering
Building East on the MU campus will be renamed "Thomas and
Nell Lafferre Hall." The building is home to a majority of
the college's classes. Mechanical
and aerospace, industrial,
civil
and environmental, and chemical
engineering are housed there.
The project will improve approximately 92,000
square feet. Improvements to the 1892 section will satisfy the
historical register code because it is listed on the historical
register. The 1922 and 1936 sections will be renovated to better
use existing interior space. The University will be seeking public
support for the renovation project, and says the gift will enhance
state funds.

“We’re happy to be able
to give something back to MU,” Tom Lafferre said. “It
has been our pleasure to make a contribution toward the enhancement
of the College of Engineering.”
Tom Lafferre earned his bachelor’s
degree in mechanical engineering from MU in 1956, a master's from
Washington University in 1967 and an advanced management degree
from the Harvard University Graduate School of Business. He joined
Monsanto upon graduation, serving in many management and engineering
roles, eventually becoming vice president of operations. His wife,
Nell, attended MU's College of Education for one year and went
on to earn a degree in education from the University of Missouri-St.
Louis.
