New
Arena Now Known
as Mizzou Arena
The new basketball arena at the University
of Missouri-Columbia is now known as "Mizzou Arena,"
the University of Missouri Board of Curators announced Nov. 26.
The Curators approved the new name after Bill and Nancy Laurie
transferred the naming rights to the Unviersity.
The Lauries donated $25 million toward the
arena project. Under the terms of the naming rights agreement,
they had the legal right to retain the naming rights. Their relinquishment
of those rights was a decision they made voluntarily.
Upon receiving the naming rights, the Board
of Curators approved the name at the recommendation of UM President
Elson S. Floyd and MU Chancellor Brady J. Deaton. The vote was
unanimous.
"We are deeply grateful to the Laurie
family for their generosity," Floyd said. "They are
tremendous supporters of this institution."
"We continue to be grateful to the Laurie
family for their long-time support of MU in academics and athletics,"
Deaton said. "Their generosity is helping us build a nationally
renowned research university and a sports complex that will serve
our student-athletes at the highest level. We respect their decision
in the matter."
MU Director of Athletics Mike Alden added,
"We're pleased to have a new name for our facility that is
representative of our University.
