The Missouri softball
team traveled to St. Louis in September for the sixth annual wheelchair
softball clinic and demonstration. Held on Spirit Field at Spanish
Lake, the St. Louis Wheelchair Athletic Association combined with
the Tigers for a noon game time. The wheelchair-accessible Spirit
Field was opened in 2002 and funded by the St. Louis Cardinals.
Fans were on hand for the free clinic and to support both teams.
The Tigers return to the field after closing the 2004 season with
a 29-26 season in which they advanced to the Big 12 Championship
game for the first time since 1997. Following their successful
regular season, Missouri continued play into the post season,
and traveled to Los Angeles for a second consecutive NCAA Regional
Championship appearance. Battling at every turn, the Tigers lost
both games against Louisville and Mississippi Valley State by
one run.
This season, the Tigers take to the field with seven new faces
filling in throughout the lineup. Blending with 13 returning players,
Head Coach Ty
Singleton is hopeful that his team can push even further into
the post-season in 2005.
Singleton also welcomes Autumn
Eastes as an assistant coach for the 2005 season. A former
Texas All-American, Eastes comes to Missouri after working at
Fresno State for three years as an assistant strength coach for
the Bulldog softball program.
“Autumn brings with her an enthusiasm and passion for the
sport of softball,” Singleton said. “I know she’s
committed to being the best coach possible and she is the type
of person that will lead through service. Autumn is both an exceptional
outfielder and slap hitter and I’m certain that her knowledge
and excitement of the sport will carry over to the team.”
Eastes is a 2002 graduate of the University of Texas and received
her Bachelor of Science degree in kinesiology with a minor in
nutrition. During her four years with the Longhorns, Eastes played
outfield for the top-ranked program. The left-handed slap-hitter
was named to the 1999 All-Big 12 First Team for her efforts both
in the field and at the plate, and was also named to the 1999
National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-America Third
Team and All-Midwest Region First Team.
A native of Lake Isabella, Calif., Eastes is a certified member
of the United States Weightlifting Federation.
