Fall Enrollment Sets
Campus Records

The University of Missouri-Columbia officially announced several record-breaking enrollment figures Oct. 4 for the 2005 fall semester.

“The records that the University of Missouri-Columbia set this year in first-time college, undergraduate, graduate, African-American, Hispanic and total enrollment are a testimony to the fact that an education at MU is a goal for a wide array of students throughout the state, nation and world,” said Ann Korschgen, vice provost for Enrollment Management. “Also, the ACT average of 25.4 for our entering students indicates that quality, as well as access, is achievable at MU.”

Total enrollment jumped 982 students from 27,003 in Fall 2004 to 27,985 in Fall 2005. The freshman class was the largest ever at 4,718, up from 4,668 last year. In addition, the number of undergraduate students at 21,375, up 2.4 percent, and graduate students at 5,527, up 9.4 percent, were the largest in the history of the University.

One of the largest increases came in minority enrollment. Mizzou broke records in both Hispanic enrollment, up 9 percent to 484, and African-American enrollment, up 8.4 percent to 1,502. African-American first-time college students were the second highest in school history at 328.

“The flagship university of the state of Missouri is working to educate our citizens and provide them a unique and successful educational experience that will ultimately lead to success in their chosen professions,” MU Provost Brian Foster said. “These record enrollment figures, as well as the quality of our students, indicate that we are succeeding in our goals to provide students with a diverse campus with many different viewpoints.”

This year's mean ACT score, a measure of the quality of this years freshman class, is 25.4. The state average ACT score is 21.6, and the national average is 20.9. In addition, the retention rate, a measure of the number of freshmen returning from last years class, was 84.2 percent.
