True Blue Mizzou Commercial

Mizzou fans of all ages came together to help the University of Missouri-Columbia create a television commercial that started airing in St. Louis and Kansas City on Sept. 22. The commercial, which is part of MU’s “For All We Call Mizzou” comprehensive campaign kickoff, portrays a family of Tiger fanatics whose love for Mizzou is shown in everything they do.

Writer and video producer Kevin Worley, BJ ’88, developed the commercial concept, which focuses on what he calls an “absurdly loyal” family of MU fans.

“I wanted to demonstrate that there is a common bond among MU grads, faculty, staff and friends of the University,” says Worley, who owns Fountain City Communications. “And that bond is our affection and our passion for Ol’ Mizzou.”

In July while producing the spot in Liberty, Mo., Worley and University officials found plenty of affection and passion for the black and gold in the town of 26,000 just a few miles northeast of Kansas City.

Administrators and staff at Liberty Public Schools provided locations inside Liberty High School and at the school’s practice football field, in addition to supplying a school bus for the shoot.

Liberty Superintendent Scott Taveau, EdD ’89, allowed his home to serve as the house depicted in the TV spot. Taveau’s neighbors didn’t seem to mind the commotion caused by Truman the Tiger, the Golden Girls, MU cheerleaders, and other cast and crew: A majority of them either attended MU, or have children who did so.

“It was great to see the support Mizzou has in the Kansas City area, said Marc Long, BA ’91, manager of MU’s University Affairs office, the commercial’s executive producer. “Everyone we met in Liberty had a connection to MU, and the leadership of the Kansas City Film Commission even came out for the shoot.”

While the sight of having a Mizzou commercial produced in their community attracted the attention of some Liberty residents, the appearance of MU quarterback Brad Smith certainly added an element of celebrity. Among the most excited spectators, perhaps, were members of the Liberty Jays and the Kearney Bulldogs, two Pop Warner football teams who took the field with Smith as part of the commercial.

“There he is!” whispered one young football player, as Smith approached the set on the practice field.

Smith’s role in the commercial is to throw a pass to “Billy,” a young Mizzou fan whose world seems to revolve around everything black and gold. And, for actor Carson Teague, a fifth-grader from Kansas City, the role wasn’t too far from real life for his family.

“My mom and my dad both went to MU,” Teague explains. “We’re definitely MU fans.” Chris Teague, BJ ’86, and Darlene Teague, BS Ed ’86, are Carson’s parents.
