Enrollment Sets Campus Record

By Christian Basi

August 25, 2003, was a record-breaking day for the University of Missouri-Columbia as officials announced first-day enrollment figures. Overall enrollment, first-time freshman enrollment and undergraduate enrollment are the highest they have been in MU’s history.

“We believe these numbers are indicative of the quality learning opportunities at Mizzou, the state’s flagship institution,” said Ann Korschgen, vice provost for enrollment management. “MU continues to be a great value for students. Our success with our Freshmen Interest Groups and undergraduate research programs helps students make a successful transition to college and provide unique experiences outside of the classroom.”

Total student enrollment increased from 26,073 to 26,783, a 2.7-percent increase from the previous year. The number of first-time freshman students increased to 4,694, a 5.1-percent increase compared to 4,465 last year. The number of total undergraduates rose to 20,529.

Preliminary enrollment figures indicate that all minority figures are comparable to last year.

“We were very happy to see a significant jump last year in minority enrollment, and we are gratified that we remained stable this year,” Korschgen said. “We are very proud of everyone who has worked in recruitment to reach our minority students.”

This year’s mean ACT score, a measure of the quality of this year’s freshman class, is 25.4. The state average ACT score is 21.4, and the national average is 20.8. In addition, the number of students receiving Bright Flight scholarships was up by 7 percent, and the number of Curator Scholars rose 7.4 percent from last year.
