Student Enrollment
Reaches Record Levels

Aug. 23 was another record-breaking day for the University of Missouri-Columbia as officials announced first-day enrollment figures. First-time freshman, undergraduate and total enrollment are the highest they have been in MU’s history.

“We’re experiencing positive trends in many different areas of enrollment and are very excited about our students being back on campus for the start of the fall semester,” said Ann Korschgen, vice provost for enrollment management. “MU offers an outstanding learning experience for students and the numbers today support that fact. We want to ensure that students from throughout Missouri have the opportunity to attend the state’s flagship institution.”

Total student enrollment increased from 26,783 to 27,088, a 1.1 percent increase from the previous year. The number of first-time freshman students increased to 4,701. The number of total undergraduates rose to 21,093, up from 20,529 last year.

Preliminary enrollment figures also indicate that minority figures have increased. The number of African-American freshmen rose 2.4 percent to 300, and the total number of minority freshmen rose 2.7 percent to 530.

“Our minority first-time college enrollment experienced an increase this year,” Korschgen said. “We believe this is due to our continued recruiting commitment to ensure a diverse student body. Students who are exposed to a wide range of diversity are better able to face challenges when they enter their professional fields.”

This year’s mean ACT score, a measure of the quality of this year’s freshman class, is 25.4. The state average ACT score is 21.5, and the national average is 20.9.
