Celebrate Mizzou!
By Jeremy Diener
The University of Missouri-Columbia on Friday joined an exclusive
group of universities striving to raise $1 billion. Volunteer
leaders made the announcement to MU faculty, staff, students and
alumni who were gathered for 'Celebrate Mizzou,' an event to recognize
Brady Deaton as MU's new leader, share a vision for the future
and celebrate the success of the For
All We Call Mizzou campaign. The announcement to increase
the goal to $1 billion came after leaders announced the campaign
had surpassed its original goal of $600 million by $3 million.
The primary focus in establishing the new goal, which officials
expect to achieve by Dec. 31, 2008, is to bolster support for
students and faculty, officials said.

The Mizzou family also gathered for the unveiling of a donor recognition wall in the south entrance of Jesse Hall. Left to right are Bill Thompson, campaign co-chair; David Housh, MU vice chancellor for development and alumni relations; Chancellor Brady Deaton; Darlene Johnson, national chair of the Jefferson Club Trustees; Mahima Chowdhury, an MU master's student in environmental design; and Larry McMullen, campaign co-chair. Chowdhury created the conceptual design for the donor wall.

“This truly is a historic day for the
University of Missouri-Columbia,” said Deaton, MU chancellor.
“We began the For All We Call Mizzou campaign in 1999 to
strengthen Missouri's flagship university by seeking support for
students, faculty, programs and facilities. We have witnessed
firsthand the incredible generosity of our supporters as they
invested in Mizzou's future. We have demonstrated the great strength
of the public/private partnership and will now take it to the
next level.”
MU is the 26th public university in the nation
to engage in a $1 billion campaign, a list that includes the University
of Michigan, The University
of North Carolina and UCLA.
“We are confident we will achieve this
new goal of $1 billion,” said Bill Thompson, campaign co-chair.
“This is something this University must do. It is very important
to us that Mizzou remains affordable to students today and tomorrow,
particularly in this environment of economic uncertainty. This
campaign already has benefited students tremendously. Increasing
the goal is necessary so that MU can continue to achieve its vision
and its mission.”

the event.

“If MU is to continue as Missouri's
premier public research university and a major economic engine,
then we must be able to recruit and retain the best faculty in
the country,” said Larry McMullen, also a campaign co-chair.
“And we intend to do just that.”
At Celebrate Mizzou, the Jefferson Club Trustees
presented Deaton with the inaugural Jefferson Medallion, which
recognizes the University's historic and philosophic ties to Thomas
Jefferson. MU was the first public university founded in the Louisiana
Purchase territory. The medallion will be worn by Deaton and future
MU chancellors on formal occasions. Earlier in the day, officials
gathered for the unveiling of a donor recognition wall in the
south entrance of Jesse Hall. The wall bears the names of donors
at the Jefferson Club Ambassador level who have supported Mizzou
during its campaign.
