Chancellor Deaton Earns International Leadership Award

By Megan Tate

The National Association of State Universities and Land-Grant Colleges (NASULGC) has recognized University of Missouri-Columbia Chancellor Brady Deaton with the Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award. This award recognizes those who further international education in public higher education.

“I was deeply moved when I learned that I had received the Michael P. Malone International Leadership Award,” Deaton said. “My commitment to promote international awareness and cross-cultural understanding was affirmed, and my conviction about the importance of international experience in higher education was reinforced.”

Deaton has been instrumental in MU's international endeavors; he believes that an international education is central to MU's land-grant mission. Through his leadership as chair of the Agricultural Economics Department, the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources became one of MU's most internationally active divisions, both in terms of student and faculty opportunities. While he was provost of the University, he established the Asian Affairs Center. He also was involved in the creation of the MU European Union Center, one of 15 funded by the European Commission at major U.S. universities. His support was crucial in the formation of the nationally recognized Global Scholars Program, which offers a comprehensive faculty development program that includes summer seminars abroad, individual curriculum development grants and interdisciplinary teaching workshops.

“Our land-grant system has contributed so much to international understanding, to an internationally shared knowledge base and to the reinvigorations of higher education in the U.S.,” Deaton said. “It still serves as a global ideal that will continue to be emulated by other countries. I am proud to be a part of such a noble effort.”

As part of this effort, Deaton has launched and hosted a series of Global Issues Forums, which are open forums that explore global topics of interest, such as how a university responds to environmental disaster or what diversity means in a global context.

Deaton received the award during NASULGC's Council on International Programs Annual Summer Meeting in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Truman's Tail - Click Here!
